About Kwanzaa

Kwanzaa is a seven-day cultural holiday that celebrates African heritage and traditions. It is observed from December 26th to January 1st each year. Here are some suggestions for how to celebrate Kwanzaa with your family:

Learn about the history and principles of Kwanzaa. Kwanzaa was created in 1966 as a way for African Americans to celebrate their cultural heritage and reaffirm their commitment to traditional African values. The holiday is based on seven principles: unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith.

Set up a Kwanzaa altar. The center of Kwanzaa celebrations is the Kwanzaa kinara, a candleholder with seven candles representing the seven principles of Kwanzaa. Place the kinara on a table or other surface, and decorate the area with African art, cloth, and other cultural items.

Celebrate with traditional foods. Kwanzaa celebrations often include the sharing of traditional African foods, such as stewed meats, grains, and vegetables. You can also incorporate other cultural dishes from your family's heritage.

Participate in cultural activities. Kwanzaa celebrations often include drumming, dancing, and other cultural activities. You can also engage in activities that celebrate your family's cultural traditions and heritage.

Reflect on the principles of Kwanzaa. Each day of Kwanzaa is dedicated to one of the seven principles of the holiday. Take time to reflect on and discuss the meaning of each principle as a family.

By following these suggestions, you and your family can celebrate Kwanzaa in a meaningful and authentic way that celebrates your cultural heritage and traditions.
