Festas Juninas also known as festas de São João for their part in celebrating the nativity of St. John the Baptist (June 24), are the annual Brazilian celebrations adapted from European Midsummer that take place in the southern midwinter. Festa Junina starts at the same time as winter in Brazil and lasts through June. In some regions (especially the North and Northeast), it lasts until July.
Festa Junina's typical outfit has a rustic western theme, with denim shorts for girls and plaid shirts for men and women. Some girls even braid their hair and paint freckles on their cheeks, but almost everyone wears some level of attire for the celebration.
After Carnival, Festa Junina is the biggest celebration in Brazil. Each area attracts millions of tourists every year, and parties there go on until July.
